[방문기] 노스캐롤라이나 랄리 한인들, “동남부체전 줄다리기 2년 연속 우승했어요”
역대 랄리한인상공회의소회장, ‘허니 피그’에 모여
내년 6월 동남부체전 등으로 얘기꽃 피워
(랄리=월드코리안신문) 이종환 기자= 랄리(Raleigh)는 노스캐롤라이나 주도(州都)다. 샬럿(Charlotte)에 이어 노스캐롤라이나에서 두 번째로 큰 도시이자, 듀크 대학이 둥지를 틀고 있는 곳이다.
랄리를 찾은 것은 11월17일이었다. ‘참나무의 도시’라는 말 그대로 길가에는 오크나무들이 숲을 이루고 있어서, 단풍비를 뿌리는 늦가을의 정취를 만끽하게 만들었다. 목적지인 한식당 ‘허니 피그’에 도착했을 때는 진병준 랄리한인상공회의소 회장 등 현지 지인들이 얘기꽃을 피우고 있었다.
“팬데믹으로 1년8개월 고생했어요. 100만불을 투자해 개업한 뒤 손님이 몰려드는가 했는데 코로나가 찾아온 겁니다. 이제 천천히 회복되기 시작해요.” 랄리한인상공회의소 초대회장을 지낸 고재식 회장이 고기집게를 든 채 말을 꺼냈다. ‘허니 피그’ 한식당은 고재식 회장의 딸이 운영한다고 했다. 고 회장은 애틀랜타에서 ‘허니 피그’ 본점을 운영하고 있는 이근수 회장과는 처남매부간이다. 랄리에 같은 이름의 프랜차이즈점을 낸 것은 그런 인연이 작용했다.
고재식 회장은 1988년에 애틀랜타로 이민와 청소업에 종사하다가 1999년 랄리로 옮겨왔다고 소개했다. 이날 모임을 주선한 진병준 랄리한인상공회의소 회장은 10여년 전 제14대 랄리한인회장도 지냈다. 랄리에서 오래동안 청소업을 경영해온 그는 지금은 사위한테 경영을 넘긴 채 자문역할만 하고 있다고 말했다.
진 회장의 사위인 김남준 회장은 고려대 출신으로 사업을 맡아 크게 키워내고 있는 것은 물론, 지난 6월부터 제21대 랄리한인회장도 맡아 한인커뮤니티에 대한 봉사에도 적극 나서고 있는 차세대 인재다.
미한인상공회의소총연합회 총괄수석부회장을 맡은 최행렬 회장도 이날 모임에 참여했다. 뉴욕에서 뷰티서플라이 사업을 하다 1997년 랄리로 내려온 그를 비즈니스에도 성공하고 아들과 딸 교육도 잘 시킨 ‘알부자’라고 진 회장은 치켜세웠다. 최 회장 또한 제17대 랄리한인회장을 역임했다.
랄리한인상공회의소는 2009년 창립됐다. 초대 고재식 회장, 2대 3대 회장에 이어 현 9대 회장으로 다시 봉사해온 진병준 회장, 제5대 회장으로 봉사한 최행렬 회장, 6,7대 회장을 지낸 박인재회장, 그리고 8대에 이어 다시 10대회장을 맡는 황옥란 차기회장이 이날 모두 참여해 역대 회장이 함께한 보기 드문 자리였다.

“오는 12월18일 랄리한인상공회의소 신구회장 이취임식이 열립니다. 신임 황옥란 회장에 대한 기대가 큽니다.”
진 회장이 후임인 황옥란회장에 대한 기대를 피력했다. 황옥란 차기회장은 지난 10월 서울에서 열린 세계한상대회에도 참여하고, 또 미주한인상공회의소가 개최한 2박3일간의 영주-대전 방문일정에도 참여했다. 기자도 이 행사에 참여해 황 회장과는 구면이었다.
황 회장은 중국동포로 미국에 온 지 17년이 됐다고 소개했다. 그는 13년 전 랄리로 와서 보험설계와 함께 인테리어 나무마루 사업을 경영하고 있는데, 카페트를 나무마루로 바꾸는 미국 가정들이 많아 사업이 활황이라고 귀띔했다.
이 자리에는 노스캐롤라이나 그린스버러한인회장을 역임한 홍성원 미 동남부한인회연합회 이사장도 함께했다. 회계사인 홍회장은 노스캐롤라이나 주립대 섬유마케팅 교수를 지내는 부인을 따라 2년전 랄리로 집을 옮겼다고 소개했다.
허니 피그에서의 점심 모임 후에는 김남진 랄리한인회장의 청소회사 사무소로 자리를 옮겼다. 이 자리에서는 랄리 코리안페스티벌과 내년 6월에 열릴 제40주년 동남부체전이 화제가 됐다.
동남부지역 26개 한인회 선수단과 관계자 등 2천명이 참여해 1박2일로 치러지는 이 체전의 줄다리기 종목에서 랄리한인회가 연속 2년 1등을 했다면서, “랄리는 체전의 꽃인 줄다리기에 강하다”고 이들은 입을 모아 자랑했다.

President Ho Chi Minh clearly stated: “General elections constitute an opportunity for the entire population to freely elect people with talents and good virtues to shoulder the national affairs.. On January 6, 1946, the first election to the National Assembly, a constitutional National Assembly of Vietnam, was held nationwide.. Following the success of the general election, the National Assembly, at its first session on March 2, 1946, elected a National Assembly Standing Committee headed by scholar Nguyen Van To and set up a coalition resistance government headed by Ho Chi Minh as President.. So, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam state was officially organized with the National Assembly as the highest state power agency and the Government as the highest administrative body elected by the National Assembly.. That was the state of the nation, by the nation and for the nation, which had full legal capacity and prestige to carry out important national tasks, namely the resistance war and national construction and defense of the national independence and freedom.. Though brief and concise, it spelt out the national and democratic nature of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, a state of the entire nation, a unified state with the highest state power body being the Parliament and the Government being the highest administrative agency with power concentrated to the utmost into the President in the administration and management of the country and civic interests and rights.. Unless an intervention to restore faith in democracy in its expansive definition is undertaken, by making it meaningful to people, “democratic fatigue syndrome” as David van Reybrouck refers to it in his provocative book Against Elections: The Case for Democracy, will set in and we will not be able to escape the syndrome’s attendant symptoms such as political cynicism, populism and authoritarianism.

The fragility of democracy calls for more democracy not less.. Unless an intervention to restore faith in democracy in its expansive definition is undertaken, by making it meaningful to people, “democratic fatigue syndrome” as David van Reybrouck refers to it in his provocative book Against Elections: The Case for Democracy, will set in and we will not be able to escape the syndrome’s attendant symptoms such as political cynicism, populism and authoritarianism.

노스캐롤라이나 애쉬빌한인회(회장 방경률)는 지난 21일 애쉬빌 중심지 타운 스퀘어 불러바드에 있는 로이터 패밀리 브랜치 YMCA에 태극기를 게양했다. 이번 태극기 게양은 지난달 한 한인 은퇴 목사로부터 YMCA 체육관 내 만국기 대열에 태극기가 빠져 있다는 사실을 전해 들은 방경률 회장이 YMCA와의 협조 끝에 성사시켰다.이 YMCA는 수영장, 농구장, 헬스클럽장, 클래스룸 등이 구축된 대형 시설로 어린이부터 시니어까지 많은 시민이 이용하고 있다. 방 회장은 이날 본지와의 통화에서 “일장기(일본 국기)도 걸려 있는데 태극기가 없다는 사실에 서운했다”면서 “정작 YMCA 측은 태극기가 빠져 있는지 인식조차 하지 못하고, 한국에 대해서도 잘 모르는 눈치였다”고 말했다.애쉬빌에는 한인 약 1000명이 거주하는 것으로 추산된다. 방 회장에 따르면 대부분 학교와 병원에서 근무하는 전문직 종사자들이지만 인구의 60%가 은퇴한 시니어 세대인 애쉬빌에서는 아시아계에 대한 관심도 적고 한국과 한인을 모르는 사람도 많다.방 회장은 곧바로 조 왓슨 헬시 리빙 코디네이터에게 정중하게 항의했다. 또 한국과 한인 사회에 대해 설명하고 태극기 게양을 약속 받았다.하지만 마냥 기다릴 수 없단 생각에 이달 초 세계한인회장대회 참석차 한국을 방문하면서 손수 태극기를 준비해 YMCA에 태극기를 직접 기부했다. 방 회장은 “이번 일을 겪으며 여기말고도 3곳에 태극기가 빠져 있다는 걸 알았다”면서 “이참에 태극기와 한국을 알리는 계기가 된 것 같다”고 밝혔다.YMCA 직원들은 적극적으로 태극기를 게양했다. 한 직원은 태권도를 배운 적이 있다며 좋아하는 깃발 중 하나가 태극기라고 말해 분위기가 훈훈했다고 방 회장은 전했다.애쉬빌 한인회는 미국 사회에서 한인 사회를 알리는 데 목적을 두고 2012년 출범했다. 방 회장은 “어찌 보면 작은 일일 수 있는데 지나치지 않고 알려준 우리 지역 한인들 덕분에 태극기도 함께 펄럭이게 됐다”면서 “이런 일이 다른 지역에서도 비일비재할텐데 이번 기회에 많이 알려져서 각 지역 한인들이 작은 부분에서부터 한국을 알리는 데 동참하면 좋겠다”고 덧붙였다.배은나 기자
