[vocabulary] 혹시 and 아마 : maybe – Funkorean4u.com

Many Korean learner are confused by 아마 and 혹시.

‘아마‘ means ‘maybe, probably, likely, perhaps’, 혹시 means ‘I wonder, by any chance, might’.

‘아마‘ is usually used in statement sentences, and ‘혹시‘ is used in statement and question sentences.

When 혹시 is used in a question sentence, it means ‘I wonder’, which expresses ‘I am not sure you know my answer’ or ‘I am going to ask something, so please be prepare’. So if you used this in a question, it feels a little more polite.

For example,

혹시 선생님 전화 번호 알아요? (I wonder) Do you know teacher’s phone number?

혹시 전화 좀 빌려 줄 수 있으세요? (I wonder) Can you lend me your phone?

혹시 여기에 어떻게 가는지 아세요? (I wonder) Do you know how to get this place?

혹시 물 좀 줄 수 있어요? (I wonder) Can you give me some water?

If 혹시 is used in a statement sentence, it means ‘if’. In this case, it is used with -(으)면 or –거든.

For example,

혹시 선생님 전화 번호를 알면 알려 주세요. If you know teacher’s phone number, please let me know.

혹시 돈이 있으면 좀 빌려 주세요. If you have some money, please lend me some.

혹시 일찍 오시거든 전화해 주세요. If you come early, please call me.

혹시 다른 일이 있으면 다음에 만나도 돼요. If you have another thing to do, we can meet next time.

How to Say ‘Maybe’ in Korean

Yes is 네 (ne) and no is 아니요 (aniyo), but do you know how to say ‘maybe’ in Korean yet? If your answer to this just so happens to be ‘maybe’, or perhaps even ‘no’, then this is the lesson for YOU!

Today you’ll learn the ways of how to say ‘maybe’ in Korean, and whatever using that word can bring about for you. Just maybe this is the word to jumpstart your Korean language learning journey. Get your notebook and pen ready, and let’s get going!

‘Maybe’ in Korean

Although there are several different ways to imply the meaning of ‘maybe’, there are three main words to use to describe it directly and generally. The first word to use is 아마 (ama), the second word to use is 아마도 (amado), and the third word to use is 어쩌면 (eojjeomyeon), all of which are interchangeable with each other.

If you want to use the word ‘maybe’ with the meaning of ‘by any chance’ (as in “can you maybe help me with this?) then using the Korean equivalent of 혹시 (hokshi) is the way to go. In turn, if you’re using the word ‘maybe’ with the connotation of ‘I wouldn’t know’ or leaning towards the negative (as in “Maybe that’s the answer, maybe it isn’t”) then you should say 글쎄요 (geulsseyo).

Expressing Events in the Future

To express probability, you can use the construction ~(으)ㄹ 거예요 :

다음 주에 시험이 있을 거예요 = Next week, there will probably be a test.

(다음 = next. 주 = week. 에 = particle. 시험 = test. 이 = particle. 있을 거예요 = will probably be)

The construction ~(으)ㄹ 거예요 doesn’t just express probability, it expresses the likelihood of events happening in the future :

거기서 집을 지을 거예요 = A house will probably be built there (in the near or distant future)

(거기서 = there. 집 = house. 을 = particle. 지을 거예요 = will probably build)

Sometimes certain adverbs like 아마 are added to emphasize how probable something will happen in the future :

아마 비가 올 거예요 = It’ll probably rain (literally the rain will come)

(아마 = probably. 비 = rain. 가 = particle. 올 거예요 = probably will come)

The construction ~(으)ㄹ 거예요 is often mistaken with the construction ~(으)ㄹ 게요 :

내일 돈을 보낼 게요 = I’ll send the money tomorrow.

(내일 = tomorrow. 돈 = money. 을 = particle. 보낼 게요 = will send)

With ~(으)ㄹ 게요, the timeline in which the events occur happen in the future, but unlike ~(으)ㄹ 거예요, there is no sense of probability.

Both constructions can be used to state the opposite of something happening in the future :

아마 선물을 안 살 거예요 = I will probably not buy a present

(아마 = probably. 선물 = present. 을 = particle. 안 = not. 살 거예요 = probably will buy)

선물을 안 살 게요 = I will not buy a present

(선물 = present. 을 = particle. 안 = not. 살 게요 = will buy)
